My partner, D, was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia in June 2020, following six months of sleep and mood disturbances. Fortunately, we were able to join the Forest of Avon’s Woodland Wellbeing group on June 22nd. Unsure of what to expect, we quickly realized that everyone was incredibly welcoming and there was no pressure to participate in anything we didn’t enjoy.
We loved our initial visit and, after much discussion, D decided he wanted to return. Personally, I’ve appreciated meeting others in a less structured environment who truly understand our experiences. Being outdoors facilitates one-on-one conversations. I find it relaxing knowing that D is safe and supported, regardless of the topic or the crafts we’re involved in.
It’s been beneficial to continue trying new things, as it challenges him mentally and provides varied subjects for discussion. Our family and friends always ask about our “Woodland Wednesday” adventures. Your group has also given me several ideas to try at home—thank you! I’ve noticed that D is more engaged overall after our morning sessions and sleeps better.
We’ve always enjoyed spending our leisure time walking, thanks to our convenient location. However, as walking becomes more challenging, the opportunity to socialize in a woodland setting has been invaluable.
